Naji Al-Ali. A Visionary Artist (1999 (or 1994?))
Origin: Egypt Lebanon | Documentary | Director: Kasim Abid | 52 minutes
Naji Al-Ali. A Visionary Artist (also known as Naji Al-Ali “An Artist with Vision”, and as The Palestinian Malcolm X)
Naji Al Ali was one of the most popular Palestinian artists ever. The film traces the life of the Palestinian cartoonist killed in England in July 1987. Still in the service of the oppressed, Naji's pen recounted the brutality of the Israeli army without sparing strong criticism of the PLO. The film chronicles his work from his birth in Galilee to his death in London, examining the influences that shaped Naji as an artist and as a human being and highlighting how his experiences mirror those of other exiled Palestinians.
The film won the audience award at the Arab Screen Independent Film Festival (1999), the award chosen by journalists at the Human Rights Film Festival in Ramallah (2000), as well as being selected at the Basic Trust International Human Rights Film Festival in Ramallah and Tel Aviv, the Hot Docs Documentary Festival and the Chicago Palestine Film Festival (2002) and the Festival of Cartoon Art (2004).
