Director Doron Eran’s film, God’s Sandbox (aka Tahara), is based on the novel Castration by Dr. Dorit Silverman. An elderly author arrives in Sinai to return her estranged, runaway daughter to Israel. Her mission, however, fails and the author ends up staying in Sinai. Mustafa, a local restaurateur, tells her a story that’s recently happened not that far from there, on the beach and in the desert, when an Israeli hippie tourist and a young Bedouin fell in love and begun a passionate love affair. The film moves along two timelines – the present, in which the mother and daughter are slowly rediscovering each other whilst listening to the story, and the past – where the young tourist unveils the secrets of the desert. In the film’s climax, she witnesses the ‘Tahara’ – the traditional female circumcision ritual. As Mustafa recounts the tale, the mother is suddenly revisited by a long-buried trauma from her past.
The film was shown at KVIFF – The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
